Prof. Nüssel at the Centro Melantone summer course in Rome

Ecumenical Summer Course in Rome for students of Protestant theology from September 11-19, 2024 on the topic “Damned? Dogmatic Differences and Ecclesial Koinonia”

Prof. Friederike Nüssel is currently in Rome, where she is leading the Centro Melantone Ecumenical Summer Course together with Prof. Dr. Matthias D. Wütrich (Systematic Theology, University of Zurich). This year's summer course is being held on the topic “Damnation? Dogmatic Differences and Ecclesial Koinonia”. Since the time of the Reformation, the denominations have been divided on the doctrinal authority of the Bishop of Rome. However, condemnations not only divided the supporters of the Reformation and the Roman Catholic Church, but also the various churches of the Reformation. In the context of the global ecumenical movement in the 20th century, the old divisions within Protestantism have been overcome and church fellowship has been established. Central to this are confession, sacraments and church structure, and thus the topics that are considered the “tria vincula” in Roman Catholic theology. The summer course is dedicated to these core topics of Protestant ecumenism, with occasional glances at how they are understood in Roman Catholic theology. The sightseeing program will focus on church-historical and institutional developments that can be studied in Rome as if through a magnifying glass. A varied program of events, such as with Father Augustinus Sander in the Dicastery for Promoting Christian Unity, lecturers from the Waldensian Faculty, with staff from Sant'Egidio or the Centro Pro Unione, enables the 15 students from Germany and Austria to gain new ecumenical insights and get to know Rome in its Christian diversity.
The Centro Melantone in Rome offers Protestant theology students and interested theologians the opportunity to immerse themselves in Christian Rome. To this end, there is an annual summer course during the semester break and a ten-month theological academic year. You can find more information at
